Which Book Cover???

Help!!! I need to decide on which cover to go with for my next novel, LILY OF THE SPRINGS. Vote for your favorite cover:

# 1 - Girl in Shorts

# 2 - Girl in White Dress

Here's the blurb for the book:

In 1952 Kentucky, 18-year-old Lily Foster, the daughter of strict Southern Baptist parents, finds herself pregnant by the town “bad boy.” Lily finds herself married to a man who doesn’t want to be a husband. Jake has no intention of letting the inconvenience of marriage stop him from what he believes is his due. In actuality, Lily is the one who is trapped. She loves Jake—always has, since they were children playing in the woods on adjoining properties--and she’s convinced she can eventually make him love her. All it will take is desire and patience. Once the baby arrives, they will be the perfect little family.

From Lily’s home on Opal Springs Ridge to a four-year stint at an army base in New Boston, Texas, and finally, to life on their own in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Lily struggles to maintain a rocky marriage with a moody, immature husband while raising two daughters. Set during the “American Dream” period of the ‘50s and into the turbulent ‘60’s, LILY OF THE SPRINGS is a story of a woman’s indomitable spirit and her fight for independence and identity in an “Ozzie & Harriet” society.

I believe the second cover goes better with the storyline.

For some reason the second one grabs me more. I like the first one, but it is more like lot's of covers out there. The second one makes it stand out more.

Though I love the lady in the dress cover; I believe the shorts cover sets the story line of the 50's and the 60's better.

I liked the first one better, visually.

I like the first one simply because if it's set in the 50's no way would she be wearing those skimpy shorts and her shirt tied showing her midriff. The bikini didn't come in until the mid-60's, and even Jeannie couldn't show her belly button in "I dream of Jeannie", and that was the early 70's. The first one seems a little more consistent with the synopsis, but that may just be me

And, BTW, both are well designed. :-D

Elizabeth, I was worried about that. But I SO love that cover. It just seems to fit the theme of the book better. I even mentioned those very things to my husband, and he says it's a small detail, and people won't care. Agghhhh. Maybe on a hot summer day in Kentucky, no one would care how she dresses? Yeah, right.

I like #1. I'd be more likely to DRESS like #2, though...you know...if I was still younger and could get away with it. LOL!

I love the cover designs too, Carole. Who does them for you?

Born in 1936, my childhood was lived during the 40s & 50s in Houston, TX.
I recall my older, teen female cousins wearing dresses similar to that on #1
for special occasions. They also wore
outfits like the one on #2 for summer
days. Both covers bring back memories
for me, but my vote goes to #2.(Bare
midriffs were visible in those days!)

Oooh, I like your answer, Pat. I asked one of my editor friends, and she likes the girl in the shorts cover, too. Didn't say anything about the way she'd dressed. Still, the votes are close!

I definitely like the dress one better! I think it's a little more classy and captivating.

Hi Carole,
I agree with Pat, they did wear stuff like that then, my mother did and she grew up in the 40s and 50s, I have seen her in pics where a tied midrif top and short shorts hanging up clothes on a clothes line. I like number 2, but would prefer it her walking down a tree lined drive as that is what I pictured when reading the book or walking between trees going back between her place and his place. Hope that makes sense.
